Death Cards Rage of Souls spell description now reads: "kills" all creatures previously was "destroys" all creatures.
robvalue | 2012-10-27 09:34:43 |
This is an intended change. Drain Souls did indeed used to say destroy all creatures, but this was inaccurate. All "destroy" means is that it is killed and cannot rebirth. And Drain Souls didn't stop Phoenix from rebirthing, so it saying "destroy" made no sense. The same was briefly done to Basilisk, but his ability has been totally changed now anyway.

How does this upgrade work? Will I need to use both codes (Truth and Beauty + new code)? Or will there be just one new code for the upgrade? I've never done this before. Thanx! TH3CR0W | 2012-10-27 20:50:44 |

That's generally how expansions work with video games.
Compare it to the cost of playing magic, where you have to keep buying cards in packs or individually, or the cost of playing a subscription-based online game. And it's better than the model used by a lot of F2P games where you have to keep paying for most of the game's good content in microtransactions over time.
I mean, if they're going to keep making new content, they have to charge for it somehow. This model is very affordable. Pollux | 2012-11-01 23:41:40 |

Considering you then get to play for free forever, I think it's totally worth the cost. This could easily be one of the best cost/playtime ratio games ever. I assume you can still keep playing online even without buying the new expansion, just you don't get the new classes. But since there is no monthly fee, I think it's perfectly reasonable that they charge for new content! Especially as they put such hard work into it with the Beta. After playing quite a few games with the Vampire class, and doing well with it (53/32), here's my opinions:
Sea Sprite is bordering on unfair. It makes such a huge difference to the Vampire player to have this. He guards against getting beaten down to the point where you don't have the life to use your Vampire cards, and also provides pressure on the opponent. It's too easy to spam it.
Phoenix is hugely more powerful with this class. Even if you just get out 1 and keep it out, the fact that it is giving you 1 free life a turn makes you much more likely to survive long enough to benefit from having him out. I guess that's just the way it goes.
Vampire Mystic (4) is totally mental. He got buffed a huge amount of times, and he's now really strong. I think he could be too strong. He is brutal in combination with Forest Sprite or Wall of Lightning.
Devoted Servant (3) is not much of a big deal now. He's not exactly bad, but I find I rarely want to play him, I usually have better options in the early game. I am disappointed when I see him as I prefer 4. I tend to find I'd rather skip over him to the higher vamps, preferring to deal with what the opponent is doing early game. If my opponent plays one I am not too bothered, I can either kill it quite quickly or else ignore it to starve them of Blood power for a long time. By the time they get the power, they may not have the life total to be able to fully use it.
Magister of Blood (8) is sickening, overpowered on its own, but with Armageddon it's insane. I think the amount of damage it deals could be reduced to 15 at least. Although Vampire Elder (7) is extremely strong too, it's the instant impact of 8 that makes it so powerful. A ban of 8 + Armageddon seems needed as things stand, but I'd rather 8 was just toned down a bit, maybe to the point that the ban is not needed. Basically if you draw 8 + Armageddon, and you can survive long enough, you just drop 8 and then Armageddon, and then you've either won or you're close to winning. Oversimplifying of course, but it's kind of like that. Modified by robvalue on 2012-11-05 08:18:39
V3, V4, V8 (+F11) well said fully agree Modified by filip on 2012-11-05 09:04:33 robvalue | 2012-11-05 13:57:32 |
Thank you : )
Yeah the stuff about Sea Sprite and Phoenix were just observations, I wasn't suggesting they need banning with the class or anything! That would be ridiculous. I guess there are always going to be cases where core cards work better with some classes than others. If any action were to be taken, I'd want it to be focused on Vampire 4 and 8. Modified by robvalue on 2012-11-05 14:07:33
I think going second vs Golem or Forest is right up there on frustrating experiences at the moment.

robvalue | 2012-11-06 10:02:59 |
I may just have been being unlucky, but I seem to go second far more than half the time now when I use Golem class. I wonder if this is real or if I am imagining it. It may be a way of balancing it by making you go first only 25% of the time or something? I need to collect some data. Then get out my old statistics books about hypothesis testing. H0: p=0.5, H1: p<0.5 ...
Edit: Hmm well it's early days, but it's 1 going first versus 5 going second. Modified by robvalue on 2012-11-06 12:00:52

Anyhow, I always seem to go second playing against Golem these days, so maybe I should just auto-surrender these.
I can have all the healing in the world and still can't prevent the inevitable rush down. I'm definitely with FinalSlayer on this one that the Golem class isn't a great design despite being a good idea. Ice Golem is already an infuriating card and now we have even more 'indestructible to spells' cards. If you're Sorcery and/or your hand is full of spells it only gets worse.
do not blame it on the class. try to learn to defend better. i'm not saying the golem class is fine (perhaps it is, perhaps not). but your comments (auto-surrender!) give me the impression that you need to practise your defensive game instead of blaming golem and forest for your losses. my apologies if i sound harsh or patronizing. i played a game the other day (against CIever i think) where i went first playing golem master and i had E7 and W4. suffice it to say my attack was ruthless but CIever pulled out a sensational defense and managed to survive by the skin of his teeth to turn the tide and win the game. i am so sad i didn't save that replay just to show you guys what you're missing... anyway, my point is that you definitely have the potential to beat those golem masters if you improve as a player (even when going second). at the very least you will see that those games will become very close (compared to what you thought was possible). it's all a matter of patience and training... Modified by filip on 2012-11-06 15:05:56
I do not doubt there's a lot of truth in what you're saying. However, I'm a mediocre player who is mostly being matched against other mediocre players.
The point I'm making is I more often than not win when playing as Golem and going first and more often than not lose when playing against Golem and going second. Clearly others will be experiencing the same. In all other other classes with perhaps the exception of Forest I haven't noticed such a 1st vs 2nd bias. This is not to question the valid points you're making, but just stating it as it is for me.
I'd love to see the numbers though, as that would tell me if it's just my playstyle, or if it's a wider issue with everyone else. For your information, the game I had recently I had A4, W10 and E1 and was constantly playing these just to stay in the running. More than anything I just get the feeling that playing against Golem as second is a very one dimensional experience. Defend /heal - defend /heal - defend /heal. Rather boring to be honest.
Modified by Jambo on 2012-11-06 15:50:22
i'm glad you didn't take my comments the wrong way. of course i can accept that you consider the playstyle needed against forest boring. yes, indeed it is also needed against golem if you go second. btw you can play aggressively against golem if you go first. anyway, if you don't like defending then that is your preference and there is not much to be said about it. it does consist part of the game though, so you will be forced to adopt it sometimes if you are going to emerge victorious (even in other matchups apart from forest/golem)
ps: playing a good defensive game is not just a matter of playing your healing cards over and over again. most of the times it's a lot more complicated than that - anticipating your opponent's moves and making preparations to counter them for example. it seems quite interesting to me (even though i really like playing an aggressive game) and i believe it can give you good insight into the game's basic principles. but of course, the most important thing is to have fun playing, so i guess everyone has their own preferences
Modified by filip on 2012-11-06 16:21:21
I've nothing against playing defensive or aggressive per se. I just don't like it when it feels like it's your only option because of the matchup, which it often does when playing 2nd against these classes, or conversely when you're playing 1st as these classes. The beauty of Spectromancer is that for the most, the playstyles can vary even within some of the classes and playing 1st or 2nd. There's also an element of rush down being the only viable way to play against Vampire since his higher level cards (7 and 8) are so very powerful. If I get V8 it's more about can I survive to get this brute out. If I can then it's often a lead in to an eventual win.
Modified by Jambo on 2012-11-06 16:51:09
The beauty of Spectromancer is that for the most, the playstyles can vary even within some of the classes and playing 1st or 2nd.
i guess it all boils down to the above statement. if that is the way you feel, i can understand your frustration. don't get me wrong - i like having options as well. but fortunately for me, i do not mind for my strategy to be dictated by my class or my opponent's class or by who goes first. i simply consider these to be more elements that i have to adapt to. i would not mind if i had to play aggressively because i happened to lack good healing cards. i would not mind if i had to play defensively because my opponent happened to start rushing me early. in a similar way, i would not mind if i had to play aggressively because i happened to get golem/forest (i play full random). i would not mind if i had to play defensively because i happened to go second and my cards are slow. i would play one game that way, then switch tactics in the next game if i get the opportunity. personally, i do not feel that the beauty of spectro lies in always having the option to adopt whichever playstyle suits you the best. i believe that the beauty of spectro lies in being able to recognize the correct strategy that is going to lead you to victory in each separate duel*. this definitely includes taking into account your class and your opponent's class. it has always been this way. it is true however, that this becomes very intensified with some of the expansion classes (for example forest and golem always play a fast game, while beastmaster and vampire always play a slow game). i understand this can make you feel restricted - but like mark rosewater is very fond of saying: restrictions breed creativity
*of course, apart from recognizing the general plan (strategy), the game's beauty also lies in executing that plan successfully (tactics): making the correct decisions every turn by weighting all the different parameters and characteristics of the game state
*that being said, i will admit i'm a bit of a sucker for aggressive plays - i always try to get advantage of every possible opportunity to attack. sometimes this gets me into serious trouble and it's definitely one area that i can work on to improve my game Modified by filip on 2012-11-06 22:30:20 FinalSlayer | 2012-11-07 11:58:44 |
Huh. I could swear myself and filip were writing incessantly about this in the middle of October... FinalSlayer | 2012-11-07 12:04:05 |
As for the whole Golem Master discussion between jambo and filip, filip is probably correct about defending...but he is not exactly disproving what Jambo is saying, either!
Look, I have pulled off some sensational victories in the previous version versus level 20+ players that played a G1 (3/17 back then) rush spam against me. Does that suddenly mean Goblin 1 was a fair card? Of course not.
Similarly, it's cool that Clever beat you in one game with you going first as Golem Master. However, it still doesn't disprove Golem Master going first being a MASSIVE advantage, and much like Goblin 1, often an auto-win. Even if some inspired play can occasionally win against it.
And yes, I am aware that G1 rush spam is stronger and more frequently an auto-win than Golem Master going first is. It's an analogy; they're both overpowered, offer a massive advantage, and (often) little chance for the opponent to fight back. Does the upgrade code work nicely with the Steam version?
And would it be better for you guys if we buy the game straight from you? I don't know what the financial situation for the devs is like, but it seems to me like people who buy the game through steam almost always have a worse experience trying to upgrade than those who get it direct from the web site. Every time there's an expansion, the update seems to come to steam late and there are lots of people complaining about it. Since the game is still supported and designed for modern operating systems, and is only purchased via downloading anyway, as far as I can tell there is literally no advantage whatsoever to buying it on steam, so I'd definitely recommend just getting it from the site. MrAnderson | 2012-11-08 01:29:18 |
I would buy the code for expansion on Plimus if I could later redeem the code on Steam. If not, then I will wait for Steam release.

One secret: this doesn't depend on whether the expansion is bought from Steam or from this site! In both cases you're getting just an activation code. All the difference is that Steam will know that you bought that code and can show it. OrionKing | 2012-11-24 08:37:11 |

Can anyone tell me when Steam will have the expansion available? I already have League of Heroes and Truth and Beauty bought through Steam. I would prefer to get Gathering of Power through Steam also. When I'm in the game and I click on "Unlock the Expansion", it opens up a menu that says "click here to buy an activation code online". So I do that and then get taken to the Steam store and to the Spectromancer page but the Gathering of Power is not available. What the heck is going on??!

I'm amazed they haven't done this. I know they say it's difficult, but there will be plenty of people like us who would prefer to organise everything through steam.
Even worse, in a Steam version there is no sign of how to get to anywhere outside of steam where you can buy it, you are just sent to the truth and beauty page. This must be costing them hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars.
I haven't bought it yet, and they must be losing plenty of potential sales through people that give up waiting. Any chance of an update from the devs on when it's going to happen?

What i spotted also is GM5: its attack is marked as "-6" when in reality it should be "X" (because its attack is based on number of allied creatures on board) or i guess it could be marked as "0" just as Forest Wolf is marked with (rather than X)
Other than that i compared it with my excel spreadsheets and everything seems to be ok
robvalue | 2013-02-10 09:23:48 |
Yup I told them about the "-6" :) They missed that first time around, so I've sent them a screenshot to explain the problem. Also I noticed that all Spirit cards are called Holy cards! And its Angel adds Holy power! Can't believe I only just realized that. It must be because they initially had Holy power for Spirit class, and forgot to change all the names when they altered it to Spirit. I've let them know about this.

LaoTse | 2013-06-06 10:30:39 |
If it´s not fixable, the accounts (all) should be banned.
Spectromancer has a very low prize compared to other games (see Scrolls, the beta is not free and new cards you have to buy!...).
So it´s totally intolerable, that players use codes from friends or exploits like the one you mentioned...
It´s a question of Ethic...imo Spectro is free, because 20$ is nothing for a game which you can always play...when I play World of Warcraft from Blizzard for example, I have to pay a fee of 15$ each month!
So if Blizzard or Mojang (Minecraft, Scrolls) would sell this game, they would take a lot of money for it; you would have to buy each single card and the beta and maybe a monthly fee too...
So guys, please be fair to these great developers, they are also very fair to you...

1 code allows several people to use the game only for offline play. online at the same time they can not get out, the second immediately get the message that what that person is already using this code. With respect to improving protection for the inability to play offline without paying - it's just a waste of time, as if the campaign did not try, no matter how much they have invested in the protection of their game it will still be compromised if it has a corresponding popularity. put a minus because firstly the former would be a waste of time, but in the end we find that no one was better not because the developers have an extra copy because it does not buy, and the players will be less than opponentsModified by tosher on 2013-06-06 18:25:29 FORESTRY | 2013-06-06 23:09:22 |

Tosher explained it perfectly.
The current system is ideal. We don't need punishing DRM; we just need a way to make sure people don't completely abuse the system. And allowing only one computer per account to be in online play at a time - that's perfect.

Pretty funny that vamp seems to do a lot worse as the levels climb. Not even over 50% past level 15. I'm not really surprised though. Ive been playing with it recently, and here's some notes: *Fragile creatures are even more fragile, so they have limited use in the Vampire's strategical scheme, thus risky plays are even riskier, and powerful synergies are harder to pull off and they die off eventually anyhow. *Vampire play seems to parallel Forest play in a manner in which both have to attack in waves, for very specific powerful timings to kill off the opponent... the difference being that powerful Vampire timings come much later than Forest... also, both benefit a lot from a board presence advantage, although Forest can reestablish board much easier after mass destruction play, while Vampire suffers a lot from it. *If Vampire gets Life rushed hard enough, it might not even have the time to use its special cards, or it will be forced to use an inadequate Special card that isnt appropiate for the context. *Vampire play seems to favour expensive and bulky creatures, such as elementals and the like as to retain board presence longer, which goes hand in hand with the previous point about the lack of favour for fragile creatures... in other words, favourable Vampire play is prone to getting rushed by the opponent because it favours a stable non-risk strategy which can easily be maneuvered around of.

Here we have the king of the idiots:
"Sigh. We explained it to you many times in this thread already but you still don't get it. As for that yuplay.ru research I haven't heard of it, so I can't comment. I imagine there must be some flaw with it though because I haven't heard it quoted before. But bear in mind as people have already told you in this thread more than once: STEAM IS ALREADY DRM. You don't need to dump your steaming pile of activation-based DRM on top of it. Your attitude makes me very, very angry, to be honest."
I don´t know if they have any impacts in their mind or if they already have a mind lol , but you should answer like this:
"Spectromancer is an own game with an own site. We also offer the game over Steam now. So we have no Steam-DRM-protection. We didn´t put anything on top of it since we are on Steam, the activation-based DRM we had already years ago. It´s our protection aside from Steam. I agree with you, that if the game would be offered just over Steam, no activation is needed, but we are not planning this.
We have a huge community, and we don´t want bother our players by making Spectromancer a Steam-only-game." (Not sure, if he can understand this last sentence lol...)
If they continue insulting you with "you still don't get it", you should counter harsh with "No, you still don't get it, Mc Fly!" and explain again and again that Spectro is an own game, until they get it lol...
Good luck with this Steam-idiots! (Maybe it´s just a waste of time, to explain them anything lol...)

Steam is a whole different world and consumer demographic; I kind of see it as "Kongregate for rich kids" But Cooler, I didnt quite see your response to as to why you don't market the game more, you respond rhetorically as if it was obvious, but at least to me it isn't obvious answer, although i could infer (incorrectly maybe) that marketing and advertisement adds intrinsic cost to any product that the customer ends up paying. I really don't care either way, but i'm curious LaoTse | 2013-06-12 15:32:58 |
I kind of see it as "Kongregate for rich kids"
A good view...The main problem is, that most Steam-users are pretty dumb, so they think all use Steam, so all games are sold only over Steam lol...
The behaviour is really close to rich kids...they don´t hear and finally insult you with their own mistakes lol...
Normally a person would visit the website (Spectromancer.com) first, to find out more...but Steam-users not lol...like a middleage priest that not hears any of your words and comes up with the same phrase on and on...
It´s really hard to reach them in a polite way...so I would have answered to this guy who said "We explained it to you many times in this thread already but you still don't get it." with "No, you still don't get it, Mc Fly!", the only way to reach such dumb and arrogant kids...

HeadphonesGirl | 2013-06-13 00:52:32 |
Cult seems to be having incredibly bad matchups against control, goblin, time, and vampire that are really shoving its win rate down. I'm surprised about this especially against control, which I always thought it does pretty well against given that it can put a lot of board and life pressure down for relatively little mana.
Certainly does seem to put a damper on the argument that blind prophet, zealot, and greater bargul are game-breaking cards, though.

either way, I dont even understand how Spectro applies the DRM, seems to be a whole different thing than the reg key that we the normal people use, so yeah...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management In this context it means simply a copy-protection. No, it´s the same, and exactly this point some Steam-users can´t understand! All what you get (now), when you buy Spectro over Steam, is the registration key. (The game can be downloaded at anytime from Spectromancer.com.) Steam starts automatically downloading the game after purchase...it would be better, if there were just a link to Spectromancer-download-page, so it would be easier understandable for the Steam-users that they buy not the game, just the key.
This process is Steam-untypical, so I understand a bit the confused kids lol...but when Cooler explains it to them in a very polite way, and they answer with "We explained it to you many times in this thread already but you still don't get it. STEAM IS ALREADY DRM. You don't need to dump your steaming pile of activation-based DRM on top of it.", your picture of rich kids is the right viewpoint (persons that not think, not hear, not want to hear and insult you with their own mistakes...). Cooler should answer more direct (harsh) with something like this "Hello Mc Fly, somebody at home?? You don´t buy my game Mc Fly, you buy my key!"
The whole situation will be even more complicated in future lol, because Steam changes soon, which means, that all Steam-games and even Spectromancer will have additional (unlockable) content in Steam, like a lot of more card-pics, backgrounds...This additional content is just available then for players, that play Spectro over Steam...so Cooler will have no chance to explain anything then!...
What the Steam users want is a Steam-only-game, because Steam-only-games need no reg keys lol (really hard to enter the key for the kids)...but that´s what Erik (HPG) and I absolutely not want...

It's planned, but not all plans came to reality, so I'm not 100% sure.
