i have often wondered: how large is the player base of spectro?
i have tried "scrolling down" on the hall of fame to see how many different accounts are there but there is no "last page" icon to click
i tried searching for a low-level account (level 1) to make it show me one of the last pages. this way i have seen page 3000, showing player positions close to 75000
however, i suppose these accounts are not all active. cooler, can you give us an estimate of how many accounts were active during 2014? (i know some of those are alt accounts but never mind)
ps: i'm only asking for this information in case it is easy to get. if it is hard for you cooler then don't bother obviously

Good question! I actually tried to figure this out last year when putting my resume together for a CCG-related job posting, and couldn't get an exact number, but established that the number of accounts with at least 1XP was at least 45,000.
As tempted as I was to keep clicking through and establish the exact number, I decided I was probably just procrastinating in wanting to do so, and closed the window before I could jump down that rabbit hole. :)

13 407 accounts were active during 2014, total accounts - 139 000

Maybe half of them just ALTs lol :) :) :)
I was wondering if there's a chacne to permit 1 account only per IP range ... at least it should help a bit avoiding many ALTs around ....

thx) It would be interesting to collect 1000+ users online. You can arrange
an event, such as birthday games, who will win 3 or more wins in the
auto search on a given day will receive the emblem of a fan of the game) We'll record online!)

For me it would be interesting to see how will server work if 300+ players were online. I expect weird glitches of unknown nature :)

Great to know the exact numbers! Very cool.
It's still my hope that someday we'll be regularly getting 1,000+ people online at a time. Not because I think it would be any more fun for the players that are already here... but just because the game deserves such popularity.

Hearing about the number of players makes me fear that we are unlikely
to see more games that builds on this games current design philosophy.
Would love to know how many copies the game sold in total but that's
probably classified.
I find the low level players (5 - 9) here
much more skilled than one would expect from a game with 40+ ranks,
which makes me think that the low levels are actually filled with alts
of high levels.

not necessarily. the game has TONS of strategic and tactical depth to master. enough to support a true magnitude of skills in various level ranges. i'm not saying that alt accounts do not exist or anything. besides, there are also accounts of new players that are currently rising to reach their natural, representative level range and then grow from there. it is true however, that the hall of fame top25 (especially the top10 players) are a bit deceiving about the effective value range of ranks in the game. let's just say that there are levels 1-35, then there are some people that play in their own league, bossing around the rest of us puny mortals

I agree (about deserving popularity), but why does Spectromancer get no press? I found it by accident (late 2013). As of about a year+ ago there were only 6 "card" games on Steam (that would come up with a "card" search)... and yet it has never (to my knowledge) actually gone on sale on Steam --- apart from that odd (unpromoted) $1 sale on Amazon ~Dec.2013. There's no announcements made to the Steam Page (not even when the game has been updated). No developer involvement on the Forums there. No developer response to the negative review bitching about DRM activation limit, and how you can just request a key reset (if its an actual valid request, and not a key released to the wild). Maybe the dev's don't actually want to be on Steam? I disagree about it not being more fun with more players. There'd very likely be more opponents to play against who aren't Spirit-Wankers. ... And no one is playing now, the server is down (how is that even possible? a 3 line csh script should be able to keep a process running). I agree, I'm sure if people knew the game certainly they would like it because the majority of the few players who joined the game are still active.

Speaking of numbers of players, is there a place we can go to determine if we can't get into the game because of a local issue, or if the number of players is currently zero due to a server issue? Say, a server status page? I haven't been able to access the game today. Cheers, -Mezz

Concerning Steam. Spectromancer, LoH and TnB expansions were featured on the main Steam page when they're released (well, every game released on Steam were featured there, so nothing special). Spectromancer was also on almost all Steam summer and winter sales until 2013. Actually, most Steam sales were during that sales. I've written tons of posts on the Steam forums (Stephanie is witness). There was big flame about DRM and most posts were in that topic. Unfortunately, it came out that people doesn't want to get information there or discuss - they want to say that developers are bastards and prove everyone this point. I write 1 post - they write 5, I write 5 answers - they write 25. It takes much time to read and (especially) write. And then, at one point that topic became too offensive, someone complained about that (not me - I can delete posts myself but don't do this) and Steam mods deleted it completely. Although there are another similar topics with my answers and explanations.
And no one is playing now, the server is down (how is that even possible? a 3 line csh script should be able to keep a process running).
The process were running and reporting. From it's point of view it looks like that there were just no new players connected. So after some time period it decided that "something should be wrong" and decided to terminate (so the system will restart it). But it wasn't terminated (IDK why, sometimes this happens) and just hanged. The watchdog script detected this and sent me an SMS so I logged and restart it manually as soon as I can. Last time such situation (with manual intervention required) was on March 2014 (almost 11 month ago). StephanieF | 2015-04-06 17:43:43 |
I have also left them alone now!(Better for my health! xD)
How can it be that such unbelievable retarded people (or kids) exist
thank you for your kind words
